Hibiscus Iced Latte

August 27, 2020
Hibiscus iced latte in three mason jars with flowers

So I admit, I latched on to the mason jar trend. It certainly is more fun drinking your iced tea or coffee out of a pretty jar with a straw. This hibiscus iced latte is tart, sweet and absolutely refreshing on a hot summer day. It’s creamy from the milk, but has a cooling effect from the ice. The addition of honey makes this drink syrupy sweet to pair beautifully with the floral tea. And the edible flowers just make it well… pretty!

I love hibiscus tea for its bright magenta color, and its tart floral flavor. It’s tastes almost like a fresh juice more than a tea. It’s the perfect tea for summer, and tastes best iced.

A latte made for two

  • Hibiscus tea bags
  • Hot water
  • Milk or cream
  • Ice
  • Honey
  • Edible flowers (optional)

Tea & Milk: Getting to know each other

To make the tea, steep tea bags in boiling water, and mix in the honey. Let it cool. Add the ice to the mason jar. Then pour the tea over the ice, and the milk over the tea. I like to let the tea and milk get to know each other before mixing them. It’s nice to get a super tart sip of pure tea, and then an extra milky sip afterwards. Eventually, the tea and milk mix, but I like to let it happen naturally. You can top your iced tea latte with edible flowers for decoration, and for the instagram picture you’ll be taking, it’s no secret that you want to capture this stunning moment!

Simple Tips

  • Let the tea cool before pouring over the ice. If you pour the hot tea, it will just melt all the ice… now we just have a watered down room temp tea. Not ideal.
  • Add the honey to the hot tea, not after it cools. It’s so frustrating trying to dissolve honey or sugar into iced tea isn’t it.
  • I like to use almond milk with a TOUCH of cream in my lattes. You can use all almond milk, all regular milk or all cream (half the amount as what you would use if it were milk, so 1/4 per serve)
