Figgin Delicious Mummies: Figs in a Blanket

October 31, 2020
Fig mummies with fresh figs and pumpkins

Happy Halloween! This Halloween inspired treat of figs in a blanket, or as I like to say figs in a tomb, combines the festivity of this holiday with one of my favorite foods: figs. These figs in a blanket consist of wrapping honey glazed figs and creamy cheese in puff pastry, and drizzling them with warm herbed butter. After baking them, the kitchen smells of warmth and the little mummies are golden brown and as gourmet as Halloween gets. The creaminess of the cheese, buttery pastry and sweet figs is divine and melts in your mouth. Not to mention the hint of rosemary and sage for a savory touch. The flavor is anything but dead.

I also wanted to make an amuse-bouche/appetiser in honor of the Halloween party my family puts on every year, which unfortunately won’t be happening this year. It’s one of my favorite gatherings of the year, an amazing way to spend time with friends, get creative and let your inner child eat all the candy it wants. Thanks, again coronavirus, you’ve taken away, yet again, another holiday. Anyway, let’s think positive, next Halloween will double the fun, double the chocolate and double the fig wrapped mummies!

Are figs in a blanket coming to the Halloween Party?

Yes! These figgin delicious mummies are definitely invited. The pastry wrapped figs are a delightful and posh appetiser and make a genuinely cute addition to a Halloween spread. It’s a finger food that can be devoured in a couple of bites, and pairs beautifully with red wine making it the perfect party food. They are satisfying and surprisingly filling! This paired with some other little bites won’t leave your guest hungry, believe me, I tested out the theory myself (one is never enough!).

From Yummy To Mummy

These figs in a blanket can easily be made any time of the year, BUT if you’re looking to turn them from a yummy bite to a mummy here are some tips:

  • Use black peppercorns as the eyes, or any food in the form of a black ball that can be eaten. The last thing we want is our guests choking on a piece of plastic.
  • When wrapping the figs in the pastry dough, leave some parts of the figs uncovered to make them resemble a mummy.
  • To serve these place them on a halloween themed platter with tombstones or place them in a tomb box that guests can open.
  • Serve them with other halloween treats like tomb sugar cookies or bloody wine cocktails.

Description

These figgin delicious mummies are a festive and posh Halloween treat. They consist of wrapping honey glazed figs and creamy cheese in pastry and topping them with melted herb butter. They are sweet and savory, crispy and buttery. They melt in your mouth.

Scale

Ingredients

For the herbed butter:

1/2 cup or 1 stick butter

1 teaspoon ground sage

1 teaspoon dried rosemary

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

For the pigs in a blanket:

8 whole fresh figs

16 tablespoons (1 cup) creamy goat cheese

1/4 cup honey

2 packages of crescent rolls

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

32 whole black peppercorns (for mummy eyes)

Instructions

For the herbed butter:

  1. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt butter with sage, rosemary and salt. Stir until completely melted and combined, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

For the figs in a blanket:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Remove dough from packages and unroll. Separate dough along perforated edge to create 16 individual triangles.
  3. Spread one tablespoon of cheese on each triangle.
  4. Slice figs in half, and place each half fig face down on the base of each triangle.
  5. Brush top of figs with honey.
  6. To wrap the figs, start with the base of the triangle and roll over until figs are completely wrapped.
  7. Once all figs are wrapped, place seam side down on baking sheets and brush with melted herbed butter.
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Allow to cool slightly then drizzle with remaining honey and sprinkle cracked black pepper.
  10. Use the peppercorns to make the mummy eyes. Serve immediately!

Notes

  • I recommend eating these right out of the oven! They are definitely best served fresh. Otherwise, store them in an air tight container in the fridge and warm in the oven.
  • To make these into mummies: when wrapping the figs leave parts of the figs exposed, they can be imperfect. Use the peppercorns as mummy eyes.
